STOUT TASTING - APRIL 2008 |
|
| |
| |
|
Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout |
|
|
|
Anderson Valley Brewing, Boonville, California With its deep, dark brown-black
color, thick, full-bodied, velvety-smooth mouth feel, mocha character, and,
strong yet subtle hop bite, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is one of the thickest,
richest, and most complex stouts on the market today. 5.7% ABV. |
| |
|
Avery Out of Bounds Stout |
| |
|
Avery Brewing, Denver, CO This big, roasty dry stout takes
flavor to the extreme. We aren't afraid to use plenty of
rich roasted barley and a mountain of hops to give this
full-bodied stout that little extra something you've been
looking for in a beer. 5.1%ABV |
| |
|
Stoudts Fat Dog Imperial Oatmeal Stout |
| |
|
Stoudts Brewing, Adamstown, Pa This unique ale merges the smooth and complex
richness of an Oatmeal Stout with the assertive hoppiness of Imperial Stout. Fat
Dog has an inviting silky-black color, a prominent roasted malt character, and a
chocolatey, coffee-like finish. 55 IBUs 9%ABV |
| |
|
Clipper City Heavy Seas Peg Leg Imperial Stout |
| |
|
Clipper City Brewing, Linthicum, MD The beer is a dry Imperial Stout - creamy
and rich with color as black as night. It has aromas of roasted coffee and dark
chocolate, hints of molasses, toffee and caramel in the taste. Clipper City will
produce only a small batch, so availability is extremely limited. IBU'S: 30
Malts: Crisp English Pale, Crisp Crystal, Chocolate and Roasted Barley Hops:
Styrian Goldings, Fuggles Magnum and Amarillo 8% ABV |
| |
|
Lagunitas Imperial Stout |
| |
|
Lagunitas Brewing Co, Petaluma, Ca
Having downed his forth Imperial Stout of theay, the wild eyed charlatan from
Voldvostogniaky belched and hollered for the Czarina to enter his chamber and
bend herself to his will. The economy was a wreck and revolt was just around the
corner. Nicky the Czar dude was off playing soldier like any pale nobleman with
a hemorrphagic skin condition would. Such were the final days of the old empire.
Reactionary, decadent, sputnik, stroganoff, wierd, and drunk. But even as the
proletariat countryside labored under inhuman conditions and a threat of being
sent to futile war in the east, they wisely took the time to slam back an
Imperial Stout or two. After all, life can be a real "suka", as they say in the
old country. Big, black, bourgeois, bolshoy, belligerent, buxom, and scary -
this is our version of the chaotic end of an era in a bottle. 8.2% ABV |
| |
|
Victory Storm King |
| |
Victory Brewing, Downingtown, Pa
With a huge, Pacific Northwest hop aroma & character upfront, Storm King
subsides into massive, roast malt complexity. More flavor than mere words can
adequately describe. Rich and substantial, it will warm your heart. 9.1% ABV |
| |
|
Moylans Ryan O'Sullivans Imperial Stout |
| |
|
Moylans Brewing & Restaurant, Novato, Ca Chocolate
truffles, cocoa, espresso coffee, burnt currants, the
sweetness of a sherry - all come to mind when enjoying an
Imperial Stout. A rich porter of English origin brewed to
withstand the long voyage from London to Czarist Russia. The
classic "Winter Warmer". Big, Strong, Malty Stout. 10%ABV |
| |
|
Smuttynose Imperial Stout |
| |
|
Smuttynose Brewing Co, Portsmouth, NH After a one year hiatus the Imperial
Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its
absence we'd have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from
20 degrees P to 24 degrees P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this
year's Barleywine, we've decided to play with the hop character, specifically
the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at
adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made
Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly
through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily
a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous,
try anything spirit (or at least that's the story I'm stickin' to). The Charles
added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound
per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even
mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel.
The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be
smoothing out a bit as it's aging. I'd give it six months or so, if you can wait
that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway. 10.1% ABV |

|
North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout |
| |
|
North Coast Brewing, Fort Bragg, Ca. A rich, intense brew with a robust
palate, a fruity nose and a warming finish. Very complex 9%ABV |
| |
|
Oskar Blues Ten Fidy |
| |
|
Oskar Blues Grill & Brew, Lyons, Co Oskar Blues has released a special
draft-only seasonal beer for the winter months. Ten FIDY Imperial stout is a
titanic wonder of a stout, immensely viscous, and loaded with neck-deep flavors
of chocolate, malt, coffee, cocoa and oats. It's the beer equivalent of
decadently rich milkshake made with Whoppers malted-milk balls and Heaven's best
chocolate ice cream. Ten FIDY is about 10% ABV and is made with enormous amounts
of two-row malts, chocolate malts, roasted barley, flaked oats and hops. Ten
FIDY's huge-but-comforting flavors hide a whopping 98 IBUs that are deftly
tucked underneath the beer's mountains of malty goodness. 9.4%ABV |
| |
| Avery
The Czar Imperial Stout |
| |
Avery Brewing Co, Boulder, Co.
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble
Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee,
rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly
recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and
become denser and more complex with age. 11% ABV |
| |
|
Southern Tier Jah-Va |
| |
Southern Tier Brewing, Lakewood, NY
Three thousand feet above sea level in the misty mountains of Jamaica, some of
the worlds finest Arabica beans are hand picked on their way to becoming Blue
Mountain Coffee. Halfway around the world, plump spring barley grows to maturity
in the loamy soil of North America while aromatic hops are cutivated to exacting
standards. Here in our kettles, these three special ingredients are blended to
create a heady mixture of sweet sugar, dark roast, and complex flavor. Please
enjoy this brew in moderation. 12% ABV |
| |
|
Weyerbacher Heresy |
| |
Weyerbacher Brewing, Eason, Pa
This incredibly intriguing Imperial Stout made by aging our
Old Heathen to perfection in Oak barrels that were used to
age bourbon. Notes of Oak, whiskey, and vanilla meld
beautifully with the roastiness of our Imperial Stout.
8.2%ABV |
